Slips, trips, and falls are the number one cause of unintentional injuries in older adults. Falls can be serious and potentially fatal; however, you have the power to prevent a fall from happening and to respond appropriately in case you find yourself on the floor.
Most falls happen at home. Do your own home assessment today and make modifications to avoid potential hazards. Ensure all walkways and doorways are well lit and free from clutter. Secure or remove
rugs. Install grab bars and handrails in bathrooms, bedrooms, and entryways. Always move slowly and be aware of your surroundings.
When talking to your doctor, ask for a fall risk assessment. They can suggest suitable exercise and balance programs to help build your strength. Also, ask if any medication you are on may affect your balance.
Should you suffer from a fall, don’t panic! Try to relax for a moment to assess your injuries. If you seem to be ok, but are having trouble getting up, ask for help. Keep a charged cell phone on you or implement
a daily check in with a friend.
If you feel that you are uninjured but alone, crawl to the nearest sturdy chair. Place both hands on the chair and bring one leg up so that your foot is flat on the floor and stable. Use the strength in your arms and stabled leg to push yourself up until your other foot is also firmly planted underneath you.
Bluffton Township Fire District responds to over 100 Lift and Assist calls per month. If you feel that you are seriously injured or if you witness a fall and are unable to help, call 911.
